About product

Olivgrun RAL 6003 from Lifecolor

Damage cannot be painted without a finish that gets damaged. The olive green shade with the number RAL 6003 in its designation is the calm surface of a military vehicle, and in the subject of corrosion it plays the role of the base: the more evenly it lies, the more convincingly chipped places, worn corners and rusty traces will stand out on it.

Two ways to get chipped paint out of it

  • The top-down method: lay the green surface down first and stipple the chips into it with dark and rusty tones through a sponge or with the tip of a brush.
  • The bottom-up method: put rusty and metal shades under the green first and then carefully break the green up so that the lower layer shows through.
  • Edges and corners: this is exactly where paint disappears first, so concentrate the chipping there and reduce it toward the middle of a surface.
  • Around hatches, grab handles and steps: concentrated wear tells the story of where the crew moved.

What to watch out for

The most frequent mistake is an even rain of dots over the whole model. Real damage is clustered, because it arises where something strikes the paint or rubs against it. The second mistake is too light a chip; a glimpse of metal tends to be darker than one expects, and only a thin light line along its upper edge gives the chip depth and the look of a lifted edge.

Who it is for

The shade will be appreciated by modelers of military vehicles who do not want a clean machine from a display case but a piece with a history. It also works as a calm surface on crates, jerrycans and equipment, where all the aging is then concentrated into a very few places.

Keep out of the reach of children and follow the manufacturer's instructions given on the packaging.

FAQ

Because chips and rust are visible only in contrast with intact paint. A continuous green surface gives the damaged places a frame; without it a model just looks dirty rather than worn.

Stippling from above is easier and easier to control. Revealing the lower layer gives more irregular and more natural edges but is harder to manage. Many modelers combine both methods on one model.

Irregularly and in clusters, mainly on edges and around hatches, grab handles and steps. Even coverage of a whole surface is the most frequent mistake and it makes a model look artificial.
