A dark finish is both an advantage and a disadvantage in the subject of wear. The advantage is that anything lighter stands out on it at once; the disadvantage, that nothing can be hidden on it. The matte black-gray shade designated Schwarzgrau Panzergrau with the number RAL 7021 is exactly such a surface, and aging has to be built on it with judgment.
On a dark gray surface the first stage of wear shows not as corrosion but as sheen. The edges the crew leans on are smoothed and start reflecting light before any brown appears. This effect is made with a dry brush carrying a very small amount of a lighter tone, drawn along the edge, or by carefully polishing the edge with a soft pencil. Only in the places where the paint has gone completely does the rust brown come into play.
It is intended for modelers who want to build wear on the contrast of light and shadow rather than on the amount of brown. It is also easy to work with when shading other dark areas and on small parts, where a lighter gray would look too loud.
