UA402 - German uniforms Field Grey 1

Lifecolor UA402 Field Grey 1, Acrylic Paint 22 ml

A water-thinnable acrylic modeling paint from the Italian brand Lifecolor, in a bottle of 22 ml, part number UA402. The Field Grey 1 shade is the base tone of German field gray (feldgrau), that is the color of the Wehrmacht uniform of the Second World War. The manufacturer carries it in a set devoted to German uniforms, where the darker Field Grey 2 under UA403 follows on from it.

How to use the shade

Feldgrau was never one exact color: it varied with the maker of the cloth, the year of the equipment, and how far the uniform had faded in the sun. A figure is therefore rarely finished in a single tone. The usual approach is a base, a lightened highlight on the crest of a fold and a darker shadow in the crease, and that is exactly what the Field Grey 1 and 2 pair is built for.

Use

• Shake the bottle thoroughly before work, the pigment settles to the bottom.
• On a brush the paint goes on as it is; for the airbrush thin it with water or with the same brand's thinner.
• On a figure, spray and brush thin coats over a primer, or the paint will fill the engraved detail.
• Do the shadow with a darker field gray, not with black, which dirties the shade and makes the result look metallic.

Who the paint is for

For figure painters in 1:35 and larger scales, and for diorama builders who put a crew beside a vehicle. The manufacturer describes it as almost odorless, so it can be painted even in a living room.
