This is an emblem plaque for a diorama and a display case, not a kit. It is placed on the base of a finished model, on the front edge of a scene or on a caption in a collection. The size of 40 mm is set by the name of the item; the same emblem is also worked in a smaller 25 mm form.
The American 1st Cavalry Division kept its cavalry designation long after it had given up horses. In the Second World War it fought as an infantry formation in the Pacific, went through the Admiralty Islands, Leyte and Luzon and had a share in the liberation of Manila. After Korea it became the pioneer of the helicopter assault - in the middle of the sixties it received an airmobile organization, and its commitment in the Ia Drang valley became a textbook example of that tactic. Its emblem will therefore be seen on very varied models, from Pacific scenes through helicopters to later wheeled equipment.
With aviation subjects the model tends to sit on a stand and the base stays free, so the plaque can be placed centrally on the upper surface. With ground scenes choose the vertical edge instead. Level and degrease the ground beforehand; with varnished bases let the varnish cure completely, otherwise the edge of the plaque will lift in time. Plan the fitting as the last step of the work.
