Eight shades of the American army MERDC camouflage with numbers to the FS standard, covering the variants from the tropics through snow to desert terrain.
Responsibility details are not available.
From the seventies the American army used a system in which a vehicle was not sprayed in one universal pattern but in a combination of two main and two supplementary tones chosen according to the season and the landscape. The result was a range of variants with names such as winter verdant, tropical verdant, snow with vegetation or red desert. This set of eight is put together so that any one of them can be mixed from it.
Dark Green is listed as FS 34079 and serves in the winter, summer and tropical verdant variants and in snow with vegetation. Field Drab (FS 30118) belongs to winter verdant, to snow on open terrain and to gray desert. Sand Brown (FS 30277) appears in all the variants except the tropical one. Night Black (FS 37038) is common to absolutely all of them.
The supplementary tones widen the reach: Interior Green (FS 34151) for summer and tropical verdant, Medium Green (FS 34102) solely for the tropical variant, Earth Yellow (FS 30257) for gray and red desert and Earth Red (FS 30117) for red desert in particular.
What is interesting is how the names of the shades in the list differ from their army designations. The tone sold as Medium Green bears the name dark green in the system and Interior Green is on the contrary a light green, so when building it is sensible to keep to the FS numbers. The paints are acrylic and are thinned with water.
When building it helps to know that the patches had prescribed shapes and proportions of area, so the layout was not random. They are applied to a scheme, not by eye, and the edges are as a rule left soft, because they were sprayed without stencils right at the unit.
