A set of four acrylic paints for the Asia Minor desert scheme carried by Iranian combat aircraft from the 1970s.
Responsibility details are not available.
This scheme came about for the machines of the Imperial Iranian Air Force, which operated over the parched highlands and over the greener coast of the Caspian Sea. The three upper tones overlapped into irregular fields and ran across the edges of the fuselage, while the lower surfaces stayed in a light gray. The finish outlasted the political upheaval at the end of the 1970s, and in the following decade Phantoms, Tigers and Tomcats carried it during the long war with Iraq.
The paints are water-thinnable acrylics in bottles of 17 ml, intended for an airbrush and for a brush. The numbers of the shades match the American FS standard, so they can be compared against a color chart or against the instructions of a kit.
The boundaries between the fields were soft but narrow on the real aircraft. You will capture them best by spraying from a short distance at low pressure, or over a makeshift mask lifted a few millimeters above the surface. Apply the gray undersurface first and run the transition to the upper surfaces slightly below the edge of the fuselage. Wear from service showed on Iranian aircraft mainly on the leading edges of the wings and around the refueling points. The green tends to be darker in photographs than one expects, while the sand tone lightens markedly after a few months, so feel free to shift the mutual ratio of the two colors on a model according to the particular photograph you are working from.
