A set of six shades for American aircraft over Southeast Asia: three camouflage tones for the upper surfaces, a light and a black underside, and the gray of interceptors.
Responsibility details are not available.
At the beginning of the sixties American tactical aircraft over Southeast Asia received a three-color wrap of sand and two greens, complemented by a light undersurface. The layout was meant to hide the machine against the jungle seen from above and against the sky from below. At the same time the aircraft of Strategic Air Command and night missions flew with a black underside, so one and the same airframe appeared in two entirely different guises.
Six shades cover the whole scheme and its variants:
The scheme is usually built from the top down: first the light sand tone, then both greens and last the lower surface. The divisions between the fields were only slightly blurred on the real machines, so a rope of modeling putty laid just above the surface gives a more credible edge than spraying done entirely freehand.
The last shade named extends the use of the set beyond the battlefield: in this tone flew the bare metal gray interceptors of home air defense, that is the twin-engine fighters and the later types in Air National Guard service. From one package you therefore cover both a machine over the jungle and a patrol aircraft over the American continent.
