The US Marine Corps received vertical take-off aircraft at the beginning of the seventies and their finishes changed several times over the following twenty years. Eight bottles cover this whole journey, from the first two-color pattern to the improvisations over the desert.
The oldest guise is made up of Dark Green (FS34079) and Gunship Grey (FS36118) on the upper surfaces, complemented by the shade Light Gull Grey (FS36440) from below. This is how the machines looked from the start of service in 1971 to roughly the end of the seventies. Extra Dark Green (FS34064) and Dark Blue-Grey (FS36099) also appeared briefly on the spines, and both later passed into the ground camouflage pattern that the machines wore in the eighties and nineties.
A special item is MK-7 Temporary White. It is not a permanent finish but a washable matte paint with which an improvised winter camouflage was created over the green surfaces. Light Ghost Grey (FS36375) had a similarly temporary role, being used to cover the green areas during the war in the Persian Gulf. The last tone, Medium Grey (FS35237), is according to the source the closest match to the color that one of the squadrons mixed right in the field and applied overall together with the previous shade.
The improvised finishes were applied unevenly and the original pattern showed through them. An even layer would therefore look unconvincing. A good guide is a photograph on which the brush strokes and the gaps between them are clearly visible.
