A cold palette for frozen skin

The skin of beings that are freezing or have long since stopped breathing is not mixed from the pink side of the palette. These four acrylics are put together the other way about: they carry the shades Ocean Blue, Grey-Blue, Snow Blue and Purple, that is three steps of cold blue supplemented by a purple tone for the hollows. Every bottle carries 17 ml and all four shades are in the range singly as well, so a tone that has run out can be replaced on its own.

Layering from the bottom up

Painting begins with the most saturated blue, which establishes the area. The middle tone is then laid only where light would fall, and the lightest stays reserved for the nose, the cheekbones, the knuckles and the edges of muscles. The purple has a different task: heavily thinned, it is let into the eye sockets, under the jaw and into the folds of the skin, where it recalls tissue showing through. The narrower the area the light tone is given, the more freezing the whole figure comes across.

Recommended procedure

• Thin drop by drop and apply several thin layers rather than one covering one.
• Even the transition between two tones out with a glaze drawn over both neighboring areas.
• Dose the purple sparingly, otherwise the whole figure slides into purple.
• Let a dry layer settle before you start on the next.

The key suits the undead, ice elementals, the drowned and units that are meant to be recognizable in an army by color, not by a badge alone. The shades can be mixed with one another and will stand combination with other acrylics of the same line.
