Green glow for energy weapons

Figures from science fiction and fantasy worlds live off the light that comes out of the model itself: a plasma cell, an engraved rune, the slit of a reactor. That is exactly what this quartet of acrylics is built for. It holds a dark green, a rich deep green, a laser yellow and a greenish white, in other words the whole transition from a darkened edge to a white-hot center.

The procedure is much the same every time and you can learn it in a single evening. The darkest tone goes on the surfaces around the source, the middle two are layered toward it over ever smaller patches, and the lightest is left on just a few square millimeters right at the focus. The narrower that last layer stays, the sharper the effect reads.

Specifications: four bottles of 17 ml, a water-thinnable acrylic binder, a matte finish, usable by brush and by airbrush. The pigment is finely ground, so even after several thin coats it does not clog the sharp edges of a casting.

The uses go further than plasma. The greenish white suits the pale skin of the undead, the laser yellow brings displays and warning lights in cockpits to life, and the dark green serves as a shadow on the uniforms of field units. Shake the bottle thoroughly before work, as the pigment settles at the bottom when it stands for a while.

A glow only comes into its own by contrast. If the material around the source stays dark and saturated, the eye reads the light as stronger even though it is painted on the figure in exactly the same way. Armor in a dark blue or weathered sheet metal around a vent therefore does as much for the final effect as the luminous tones in this box.
