Weathered rock is rock that the weather wore down for a long time and from various sides. Bulging arches, hollowed pockets and edges without a blade are left on it. This mold is advised for places where water and wind bore down on stone at the same time, that is by rivers and lakes, in canyons and in parched regions. A casting from it looks old, which on a model is valued more highly than perfection.
Plaster drinks, and in that lies the whole trick. If liquid pigment is applied to a casting that is still damp, it soaks in deep and the texture divides itself into light crowns and dark bottoms. It pays off to start with the lightest tone over the whole area, to add a medium brown into the hollows and only at the end to reach for the darkest color in spots. A dry casting takes paint less well and the result stays on the surface.
Rock castings are seated while still damp, so that they can be broken to fit the shape of a slope. The gaps around them are filled by the surplus plaster, into which the texture of stone is pressed at once with a spatula or with aluminum foil. Once dry, the transition between a casting and the terrain is invisible and a whole face looks like one piece of rock. It is good to prepare more castings in advance than you seem to need: plaster breaks unpredictably and a spare piece always comes in handy at the moment when a finished face is being composed out of order.
