A marker set for squiggle camouflage

A set of markers from the RC Marker range with the shades for the squiggle camouflage of Axis aircraft of the Second World War. The tip applies the paint directly, so the narrow wavy line is drawn freehand much as with a pencil. There is no mixing of paint, no filling of a cup and no masking of the surroundings.

Why a marker and not an airbrush

Squiggle camouflage is made up of a dense tangle of thin lines running across the whole surface of a machine. With an airbrush such a line is demanding: it calls for a fine nozzle, low pressure and a steady hand, and a single hesitation shows up as a blot or an oversprayed band. The tip of a marker holds the width of the stroke by itself, the work can be interrupted at any point and picked up again smoothly after a break, which helps with a pattern drawn over several sessions.

How to proceed

• Test the shade and the strength of the stroke on an offcut of plastic or on a hidden area of the model first.
• Let the base coat dry through completely; on fresh paint the stroke bleeds and smears.
• Wash and degrease the area before drawing, as grease breaks the line.
• Guide the tip lightly and in one stroke; pressure only widens the mark.
• Let the applied layer dry and only then go over it a second time if needed.
• Wipe the tip as you work and store the markers carefully closed, so that they do not dry out.

Terms of supply

A set of markers in the shades for this camouflage is supplied. A model, other paints, varnishes and masking material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Work in a well-ventilated room and keep the markers out of the reach of children.
