X-19 Smoke (Enamel)

This shade from the Tamiya enamel (synthetic) range, holding 10 ml, is not an ordinary covering paint. X-19 Smoke is a transparent smoke (tinting) shade: once applied, the base shows through and the paint only darkens it toward a smoked tone. The saturation is governed by the number of coats, not by coverage. The X range means a gloss surface. It is a solvent-based paint that is thinned and cleaned with X-20 thinner (without the letter A); do not confuse it with the acrylic version of the same number, which is thinned with X-20A.

Use

• Darkening clear parts: canopies, windows, headlights, tinted car glass.
• Smoked exhaust trails on the fuselage, the wings and the hull; smoke streaks behind nozzles.
• Burn marks and scorching around barrels, weapon muzzles and jet engine outlets, applied with an airbrush in thin coats.
• Subtle patina and soiling on glazing, and toning down a gloss that is too fresh.
• It is applied with an airbrush and with a brush; for spraying it is thinned with X-20 thinner, ideally very thinly and in many passes.

Who the paint is for

For modelers who do effects and weathering on aircraft, armor, cars and dioramas. Enamels are the classic medium for washes and picking out panel lines over a cured acrylic base, because they can be corrected with a solvent if needed without damaging the acrylic coat beneath them. Note: if you are looking for a full covering paint, X-19 Smoke is not one.

The paint is a flammable liquid with organic solvents. It irritates the airways, so work in a well ventilated space and use protection for your airways when spraying. Keep out of reach of children and away from sources of ignition. The paint is supplied on its own and thinner is not included in the package.
