A figure from the Rage of Ages fantasy range, this time in a larger format. The 54 mm is the nominal height of the character, the traditional collector's size that figures have been painted at for decades. Compared with the smaller 35 mm characters there is considerably more surface here, and with it a different way of working: what is merely suggested on a small figure has to be genuinely painted out here. The range is cast in resin, a material that on a larger format holds even such details as the texture of cloth or hair.
Wash the casting first in lukewarm soapy water. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw and level the surface with wet sandpaper. On a 54 mm figure it pays to pin the joints: drill a hole in both parts and glue a piece of wire in. Cyanoacrylate glue on its own gives way in time on larger and heavier parts, for example on an arm with a raised weapon. Fill the seams after gluing and sand them back, or the first darker coat of paint will bring them out.
Fifty-four millimeters is exactly the size at which you can work with a soft transition from light into shadow. Apply heavily thinned layers and mix intermediate steps between the shadow tone and the highlight; the transition should come from gradual overlaying, not from spreading wet paint about. On large surfaces such as a cloak you will appreciate a damp brush with which the edge of a layer is gently blended before it dries. Leave the face and the hands for a moment when you have peace and quiet, as at this size they draw the viewer's eye first. A final matte varnish evens out the surface and protects the figure during handling.
The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
