A base for your own diorama from Woodland Scenics, smaller format

This is a base for building your own diorama, not a finished scene and not a model kit. The base gives the work firm support, a clear boundary to the scene and a flat surface on which terrain can be shaped, scatter and grass glued down, small trees set in place and figures or vehicles spread out. The smaller format suits a single dominant feature and quick completion.

The procedure

• First lay the scene out dry: where the road, the slope and the main model will go.
• Shape the terrain from foam polystyrene, plaster or modeling compound and let it dry thoroughly.
• Paint the surface an earth shade and only then apply scatter, grass and foliage.
• Clean the edges of the base up and paint them a single color; a sharp clean edge lifts the impression of the whole work.

Building tips

A small area forces restraint, which is why it is rewarding for first attempts. Hold to one idea and one main object, and let the rest of the area merely complete the setting. Apply the materials in layers from coarser to finer and rather tone the colors down, because freshly applied scatter tends to be more saturated than a real landscape. Finally, fix everything with thinned PVA glue from a dropper, so that the scene withstands handling and carrying.
