About product

Phillips screw with a cross slot in the 0.7 mm size

This is an add-on set of small imitations of fasteners for models of military and civilian vehicles. It is not a kit and it is not a model; nothing can be built from it on its own. Its purpose is a single one: to replace a coarsely molded screw head on a model in progress with a part that has the right shape and sharp edges.

Why replace a molded detail

Heads molded directly on a plastic part are always a compromise of the mold. They have rounded edges, the draft needed to release the molding takes them down, and a parting line often cuts across them. A cross slot is moreover a detail that molding at a small scale practically cannot manage, so all that is left on the model is a dull ring. When cleaning up seams and sanding surfaces the original head moreover disappears altogether. A separately fitted part holds its shape even once painted and after a wash, when flat relief is lost entirely.

Fitting into a drilled hole

The method is the same every time. Cut the original head off with a sharp scalpel and sand the surface smooth. Mark the position with a point, so that the drill does not wander, and only then drill a hole matching the shank of the part with a micro drill in a hand holder. Make the hole rather shallower than the shank is long, so that the head seats reliably. Set the part in with tweezers and secure it with the slightest drop of cyanoacrylate glue applied on the tip of a wire. Excess glue would flood the very slot the set is bought for.

Scale fidelity

Choose the size according to the scale of the model, not according to how well the detail is visible. As a guide in this range, the 0.7 mm size matches the finer scales rather, roughly the range 1:72 to 1:48. Before building, hold the size up to the place the part is to go.

Who the set is for

  • builders of models of vehicles who are detailing production kits
  • modelers building conversions and scratchbuilt parts, where fasteners are missing altogether
  • those who want uniform heads across a whole model instead of a mixture of shapes from various molds

This is an add-on set, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is an add-on set of small parts, which are fitted onto a model already in progress or finished. The model they are used on is not included in the package.

Choose the hole by the shank of the part, not by the head, and try it first on an offcut of plastic from a sprue gate. Drill rather shallower, so that the head seats on the surface and does not sink into the material.

Check the number of pieces and the exact dimensions of the individual sections of the part on the box of the particular package.

Check the material on the box. The method with a drilled hole and cyanoacrylate glue works with all the materials commonly used for sets like these.
