The designation H38 is used in the literature for a later form of the Hotchkiss light tank, which received a more powerful engine and with it a modified rear of the hull. In 1:100 scale the result is a small model that suits a wider collection of French hardware or a gaming table. The set is a kit, not a finished model. The Hotchkiss range came into being in the second half of the 1930s as a light tank built from cast bolted segments. The form designated H38 differed from the original H35 mainly in a more powerful engine, which was meant to improve mobility on slopes and in soft ground. The basic layout stayed the same: a crew of two, a one-man turret and a short 37 mm gun. Closer details of the production batches and the exact numbers built are given differently in the specialist literature.
Small vehicles deserve a properly prepared surface. Before you start gluing, try the parts dry and remove any mold parting lines with fine abrasive paper under very light pressure. Dose the glue on the tip of a toothpick or a thin wire — a drop straight from the tube floods the detail in this scale. Once it is glued, degrease the model, apply a thin primer and the base shade. You create contrast by lightening the upper surfaces slightly and darkening the lower parts; the eye then sees volume even where the shapes are small. Finish with a matte clear coat and light dust on the running gear. The model stands out well on a simple base of stiff card with a scatter.
