The kit captures the Soviet SU-85 self-propelled gun, that is a tank destroyer built on the chassis of the T-34 medium tank. The model in 1:100 is small, with a modest number of parts and with the emphasis on the characteristic low silhouette with its fixed fighting superstructure. The SU-85 appeared in 1943 in response to the need for a self-propelled weapon able to destroy armored targets at longer range. The design followed on from an earlier self-propelled gun on the same chassis, but an 85 mm gun was built into the fixed superstructure. The fixed casemate superstructure with no rotating turret made it possible to use a more powerful weapon with a low silhouette and less weight, in exchange for limited traverse. The SU-85 stayed in service relatively briefly, because it was replaced by a type with a larger-caliber gun on the same chassis.
Cut the small parts off with a sharp scalpel and clean them up with a fine sanding sponge. Glue with thin cement for plastic applied on the tip of a brush, so that the engraving on the superstructure is preserved. Apply a thin primer and spray the paint with an airbrush in light coats; the large flat surfaces of the superstructure will appreciate fine shading to break up the monotony. Keep the weathering restrained; dust on the running gear and discreet edge highlighting with a dry brush suit it.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
