An injection-molded plastic kit of the factory road-racing motorcycle Yamaha YZR500, internal designation 0WA8, in 1:12 scale from Hasegawa of Japan. The boxing covers the version carrying the Tech 21 sponsor livery of the 1989 season. For motorcycles, 1:12 means a large, easily read model in which the frame, the engine and the suspension details all come through.
The YZR500 was Yamaha's factory road-racing machine for the 500 cc class, built around a two-stroke V4 with expansion chambers routed around the whole frame. This was equipment meant purely for the race track: a twin-spar aluminum frame, practically no concessions to comfort and tuned porting that gave full power only in a narrow rev band. The 0WA8 designation belongs to the factory machines of the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. The livery carrying the Tech 21 name appeared at that time on machines Yamaha fielded in Japanese racing, and it is one of the most recognizable liveries of the era.
On a motorcycle the order of work differs from a car: finish the frame and the engine first, only then the fairing. Paint the engine and the expansion chambers separately; the chambers look best in a fine metallic shade with heat discoloration added around the cylinder heads. The fairing is the main showpiece of the model and calls for filler primer, a smooth finish and a clear coat over the decals. Apply the sponsor decals onto a gloss base and clear-coat them once dry so the edges disappear. Brake lines and control cables can be suggested with thin wire or wire sleeving. The chain and sprockets deserve particular attention, as they are clearly visible on the finished model.
