About product

MASTER 1:144 Gloster Meteor F.8/T.7 — pitot tube

This set from the Polish brand MASTER contains a turned metal pitot tube for models of the Gloster Meteor aircraft in 1:144 scale. A pitot tube is a sensor of ram pressure from which the onboard instruments derive the speed of flight, and on the real aircraft it is a very thin, perfectly straight rod. That is exactly what is practically unattainable with a plastic part in a small scale. It is not a model of an airplane, but a replacement part for a kit you have already bought.

The real subject

The Gloster Meteor was the first British jet fighter aircraft brought into regular service and the only Allied jet type deployed during the Second World War. After the war it went through a long development; the single-seat F.8 version with a lengthened fuselage and a new tail surface became the most widespread variant and the two-seat T.7 served for pilot training. The Meteor flew with a number of air forces as a target tug and a test aircraft as well, and it remains a popular subject among modelers to this day.

Fitting and tips

Cut the plastic tube off the model with a sharp scalpel and level the area. Drill the hole for the pin of the metal part with the finest micro drill bit in a pin vise, so that you keep the drilling under control. The metal is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, which you should apply on the tip of a toothpick, not straight from the bottle. Fit the tube only after painting and clear coating are finished — during the build you would needlessly knock into it and bend it. If you do paint it, use a metal primer and only a very thin coat, so that the edges do not become rounded.

Who the set is for

  • builders of jet aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • modelers who mind thick and crooked plastic tubes
  • anyone interested in British postwar aircraft
  • modelers used to working with small metal parts

This is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a standalone model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A sensor of ram pressure from which the speed of flight is derived on an aircraft. On a model it is a thin protruding rod.

It is not. It is only a metal replacement part for a model that you already have built or under construction.

Cut the plastic tube off, drill the hole with a micro drill bit and glue the metal pin in with a minimal amount of cyanoacrylate glue.

You do not. If you do paint it, use a metal primer and apply only a thin coat, so that the shape stays crisp.
