A resin accessory for building the Vickers Viscount in 1:144 scale. It replaces the engine nacelle from a kit with a casting with a more accurate shape of the cowling. The set is intended for finishing a model under construction and does not hold the aircraft itself.
Unlike the other engine sets of this range, this is not a jet engine in an underslung nacelle but a turboprop powerplant built directly into the wing. The Dart is an engine with a centrifugal compressor, which gives most of its power to the propeller, while the rest leaves through the exhaust nozzle as residual thrust. The nacelle therefore has no circular fan intake, but narrow air intakes at the sides and a cowling drawn out to the rear ending in an exhaust that opens along the wing. The Viscount went down in history as the first airliner put into series service with turboprop power, and its smooth running was a fundamental change from the piston machines of the time. The 505 and 506 designations point to closely related versions of the engine, which differed mainly in power and in equipment according to the order of the operator.
Rid the casting of the mold release agent with lukewarm water and dish soap. Cut the pour blocks away with a saw; the cowling of a turboprop unit is slim and is easily damaged if broken off roughly. Resin sands more softly and faster than polystyrene, so finish wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). With an engine built into the wing it is essential to check the joint of the nacelle with the leading edge dry, as the gap cannot be hidden under a pylon here and has to be filled and sanded over. Paint the exhaust area and the insides of the intakes before assembly.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a resin casting for more experienced modelers. Glue, paints and a base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
