About product

SSN-637 Sturgeon in 1:144 scale from Mikromir

The kit captures the American nuclear attack submarine designated SSN-637, which gave her name to the whole class that followed. The model comes in 1:144 scale as an unassembled and unpainted kit. The makeup of the package, the number of parts, the material of the moldings and the marking options offered are to be found in the instructions inside the package.

The real subject

Sturgeon was the lead unit of the American class of nuclear-powered attack submarines built in the 1960s as a development step following on from the earlier attack classes. The design grew out of the teardrop hull shape, which by that time had settled as the standard for vessels optimized for speed and maneuverability while submerged rather than for running on the surface. A characteristic feature of the class was the tall sail with large planes, and the main armament consisted of torpedo tubes placed along the sides of the forward hull, because the space in the bow was taken up by the sonar. The boats of this class served through the Cold War mainly on reconnaissance, surveillance and escort duties and were gradually withdrawn.

Building and painting tips

On submarine models the seams matter most. The hull is usually made up of longitudinal or transverse parts, and any untreated joint shows immediately on a smooth curved surface, so expect filling and gradual sanding through several grits. Before painting, spray the hull with primer, which will reveal any shortcomings. A matte or semi-gloss surface suits a cabinet, with a fine distinction of shade between the upper hull, the underside and the dividing line. Apply small anticorrosion and maintenance stains sparingly, as overdone weathering is distracting on a submarine. If the kit contains no stand, prepare a base of your own, because the model will not stay put on its curved hull.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of submarine models and modelers interested in the postwar navy.
  • Builders who want a striking model with a simple silhouette and a clean surface for a cabinet.
  • Modelers with experience of filling and sanding larger smooth areas.
  • Anyone interested in 1:144 scale, in which submarines are collected as a single series.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The contents of the package are given in the instructions in the package. If a stand is missing, prepare a base of your own, as the model will not stay put on its curved hull.

You will find the material of the moldings on the box and in the instructions.

You will find the particular dimensions in the instructions. Given the 1:144 scale and the size of the subject, this is a fairly long model, so allow for the corresponding space in a cabinet.

The hull calls for careful filling and sanding of the seams, so we recommend at least basic experience.
