About product

Royal Navy searchlights in 1:700 scale (Flyhawk)

This detail set from the manufacturer Flyhawk is intended for modelers who want to replace the simplified plastic searchlights on a model of a British warship in 1:700 scale with a finer rendering. The package contains only the accessory parts themselves, with no model, glue or paints. The designation in the name refers to the first set in a range devoted to the lighting equipment of Royal Navy ships.

What searchlights do on a model

Signal and search lights were ordinary equipment on warships. They sat on mast platforms, on superstructures and at the sides of funnels, that is, in places that are easy to see on a finished model. It is precisely these small elements that in injection-molded plastic in 1:700 scale are only hinted at, so exchanging them for separate fine parts is among the most visible improvements of a whole build. The set also suits a diorama scene, where a model is complemented by a harbor or deck setting.

Work tips

The parts are very small, so prepare pointed tweezers, a sharp scalpel and a light surface from which a small part will not disappear. First sand the original plastic searchlight away and level the area. They are glued in spots with cyanoacrylate glue, ideally the gel version, which gives a few seconds to fine-tune the position. Apply the base coat in a thin layer, so that the detail is not flooded. The body of a searchlight is usually painted in the shade of the ship and the lens can be indicated with a drop of gloss varnish or silver paint.

Who the set is for

  • Ship modelers in 1:700 scale who build beyond the contents of the box
  • Builders of British vessels from the period of the Second World War
  • More experienced modelers used to working with miniature parts and cyanoacrylate glue
  • Makers of dioramas and display scenes, where a model is looked at from close up

This is an accessory set. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory set of miniature searchlights that are glued onto an already purchased model of a ship in 1:700 scale.

Royal Navy vessels from the period of the Second World War in 1:700 scale. No list of particular ships is given with the set, so plan the placement according to the documentation of your own model.

Best of all with cyanoacrylate glue, ideally the gel version, which gives a moment to fine-tune the position. Ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on accessory parts.

They are not. The set contains only the accessory parts; the base coat and the paints have to be bought as well.
