This set from the Polish maker Aber holds 26 single-wing nuts in 1:16 scale, combining a photo-etched body with a turned bolt. It is not a model or a kit, but a set of small metal details that a modeler will use on a model of a German vehicle he already owns. Wing nuts were found on vehicles of the period wherever something had to be released quickly by hand without tools: brackets for tools and digging equipment on the fenders, holders for spare parts, the fastening of crates and tarpaulins. In 1:16 scale they are large enough that a simplified plastic version is glaring.
The large 1:16 scale is unforgiving. On a part this small, injection-molded plastic always has a parting line and a rounded edge, the wing tends to be thicker than it should be, and a mark is left after it is cut from the sprue. The combination of a photo-etched wing and a turned shank, on the other hand, gives the right thickness and a sharp edge, and because it is metal it will also take sanding of the area around it without the risk of the detail being smeared away. Twenty-six pieces are enough to fit out a whole vehicle uniformly, not just the few most conspicuous places.
Have tweezers with fine tips ready and work over a surface with a raised edge, as a part this small jumps off the bench roughly once an afternoon. Cut the photo-etched parts out with a scalpel, not with pliers. Degrease the metal with alcohol before gluing. They are glued with superglue applied in an absolutely minimal amount; excess would fill the recess under the wing. Before fitting them it is practical to paint the parts separately, pinned or stuck to double-sided tape, because once they are glued to the model you can no longer reach them. Use a primer made for metal on metal parts, or the paint will come off when they are handled.
This is an add-on set for a kit you already own. The model, paints, glue and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
