A plastic kit of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner airliner in the rendering of the Japanese carrier Japan Airlines. The 1:200 scale has long been the standard for civil airliners: even a large widebody machine stays a reasonably sized model that fits into an ordinary display case, and a collection built in one scale keeps its mutual proportions. The package holds plastic parts and a decal sheet with the carrier's markings. The maker is the Japanese company Hasegawa, which has long experience with civil models in this scale.
The Boeing 787-9 is the stretched version of the widebody twin-engined 787 Dreamliner. The type differs from older machines of the same category above all in the extensive use of composite materials in the airframe, in the aerodynamics of a wing with raked tips and in modern high-bypass turbofan engines. The result is a lower fuel consumption per seat and a range that allows even distant pairs of cities to be linked by direct services. Japan Airlines is among the significant operators of the 787 family and uses it on long-haul routes.
With airliners a smooth surface and a clean gloss are what count. Fill the joints of the fuselage and the leading edges carefully and sand them through several grits, because a gloss finish brings out every scratch. Spray the white areas over a light base in several thin coats, otherwise the surface will stay uneven. Apply the decals over a gloss base and settle them with a decal softener so that they take to the rounded fuselage and the transitions between panels. Before you close the fuselage, check the balance of the model, so that once finished it stands on the nose gear and does not sit down on its tail.
