A set of turned metal barrels in 1:200 scale from the Polish maker Aber. According to the name it contains barrels of three calibers: nine pieces of 280 mm, twelve pieces of 150 mm and fourteen pieces of 105 mm, that is the main artillery armament of the ship including the smaller calibers. This is not a kit of the ship but replacement parts for a part-built model.
Barrels are the typical weak link on a model of a large warship. Injected plastic produces them in two halves, so a lengthwise parting line appears that has to be removed laboriously, and a thin cylinder is on top of that rarely perfectly straight. Turned metal removes this problem: the barrel is straight, circular in section and seamless, so it suits even a model that will later be photographed close up. On the larger calibers the muzzle is usually suggested as well, which is missing on a plastic part.
Degrease the metal parts first, otherwise the paint will not hold. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue or with two-part epoxy, because plastic cement does not work on metal. The holes in the turrets and mounts sometimes need slight redrilling so that the barrel seats without play and still stays on the axis; check the alignment of the whole group seen from the front, because barrels turned out of line are immediately visible on the model. Use a primer for metal before painting, and only then the base shade of the hull and superstructure. Paint the smaller calibers before fitting them, since handling them once glued is risky.
The set is an accessory, not a kit. The base model of the ship, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Before buying, check that the barrels fit the kit you are building.
