Celica XX was the designation under which the top variant of the second-generation Celica was sold on the Japanese home market. It differed from the ordinary Celica mainly in a longer front end, which made room for an inline six instead of a four. The type designation MA61 belongs precisely to the six-cylinder version of 2.8 liters with fuel injection. Characteristic of the car are the retractable headlights, the angular silhouette with a sloping rear and, for the range of the day, fairly rich equipment, which aimed the car more at the category of fast touring coupes than of pure sports cars. On export markets the same concept was sold under a different name, and today it is among the sought-after youngtimers.
The basis of a good car model is the body. Sand the parting seams down step by step from coarser to fine paper and wet, and wash and degrease the body before painting. Apply the paint in thin coats, and once it is dry comes the gloss coat and any polishing, which gives the surface depth. Pay attention to the retractable headlights; they can be built either raised or lowered and it is precisely they that set the expression of the car, so test them dry and watch that the covers line up with the outline of the hood. Chrome strips are best done with metal foil or a fine brush with chrome paint; spraying them all is usually needlessly laborious. Paint and assemble the interior before you close it under the body, as you cannot get to the details afterwards. Glue the glazing with cement for clear plastic; ordinary cement will fog it.
