The steel barrel used for burning rubbish and for warmth is one of the most eloquent props of a modern diorama. All you have to do with this unpainted casting in 1:24 scale from the manufacturer MAiM is clean it up and paint it, and the scene around it will start telling itself.
Figures naturally gather around a barrel with a fire in it: workers on a building site, survivors in a post-apocalyptic world or a night watch. The prop suits winter pictures, abandoned parking lots, the corners of industrial estates and the space beside vehicle wrecks in 1:24 scale. It also works as an accent of light and color, because the warm tones of fire brighten an otherwise gray urban scene.
The basis is believable rust: over a dark brown base lay patches of lighter rust tones on with a sponge and fill them out with pigments. Treat the upper rim of the barrel with a burnt black fading into gray and darken the inside with sooty shades. Anyone who wants to go further can build a tiny flickering LED into the barrel and make the flames from clear shaped plastic, and the effect of a night fire is then impossible to miss.
The prop is supplied unpainted. Paints, lighting and other accessories are not included in the package.
