The real subject

The International Space Station is the largest structure people have ever placed in orbit. Its truss measures about one hundred nine meters, so in 1:3000 scale it comes out at just under four centimeters; the whole object can therefore stand on a shelf, where in a larger scale the station would never fit. This small size is precisely the main draw of miniature space models.

The model

Building and painting tips

At such a small scale, clean work counts for more than the number of paints.

• Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and gently sand the mark.
• Wash and degrease the parts before painting.
• The solar panels stand out if you choose a different shade and sheen from the rest of the structure.
• Apply the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat floods the fine detail.
• Protect the model from dust once it is finished, as the thin trusses are hard to clean.
