A decal sheet with the lozenge pattern in the five-color variant, rendered in 1:32 scale. Lozenge is a camouflage pattern made up of colored polygons; at the end of the First World War the German air service printed it directly onto the covering fabric instead of a painted coat. It was made in variants that differed in the number of color fields, and this sheet carries the variant with five shades.
The print carries the structure of the cloth, so the applied area does not look like a smooth film but like stretched covering. In the large 1:32 scale it shows at once, because the eye reads a large smooth area as plastic. The texture also holds toning paint in the recesses, and the finished covering gains depth from it.
Overcoat the base with gloss varnish; on a matte area white patches would appear under the film. Cut out the pieces with a narrow margin and soak them one at a time. After a few seconds in lukewarm water let the piece rest until it can be slid off the backing, settle it on the damp area and press the water out with a soft cloth from the center outward. Over the ribs and the stitched seams a decal softener helps the film settle; once it has been applied, do not move the piece any more. Finally overcoat the finished area.
For the modeler who is building an aircraft of the First World War period in a large scale. Painting dozens of polygons by hand is slow and only exceptionally comes out symmetrically on both wings; a printed sheet gives the same result across the whole area.
