A photo-etched detail set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard of Obrnice near Most, intended for the large-scale model of the British four-engine bomber Avro Lancaster in the B Mk.I and B Mk.III versions. The set is aimed at the bomb racks and their attachments, that is at the bomb bay, which on a model in 1:32 scale is clearly visible with the doors open. It is an accessory for the base model, not a kit in its own right.
Injected plastic has a technological minimum wall thickness, and on the small brackets, straps and stirrups in 1:32 scale that shows up as a simplified shape that looks far too heavy. Photo-etch is a few tenths of a millimeter thick, so the ratio of material to the size of the part is a far better match. In the bomb bay, where the parts overlap visually and the viewer takes in their depth, the difference between plastic and metal shows at first glance. Metal also holds its shape on long thin elements that would sag in plastic.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard glass or metal surface, or with etch nippers. Never break them off with your fingers, because once bent, the metal cannot be straightened back. Level the remains of the tab with a fine file. Make the bends in a photo-etch bending tool or between two blades so that the edge is sharp and straight. It is bonded with super glue, and with epoxy on larger areas; ordinary plastic cement will not join metal. Degrease the surface before painting and lay down a primer, otherwise paint comes off smooth metal during handling. It makes sense to finish and paint the bomb bay before you close the fuselage.
