The codes AR and the letter G on the fuselage, together with serial number W4783, belonged to a bomber of No. 460 Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force. Its crews flew ninety combat missions with it over occupied Europe and, unlike most of its sister aircraft, the machine survived them. By 1944 it was too worn for the front, so it flew across the Atlantic and the Pacific to Australia, where it served a war loan campaign. Since then it has stood in the hall of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and is among the best preserved four engine bombers in the world.
The sheet captures its appearance from the spring of 1944. Besides the large fuselage letters it holds the serial number, national insignia and the record of missions on the left side of the nose, which on this aircraft grew to several rows. Small technical markings are added which in the large scale can be made out without a magnifier, among them the marks by the filler points and the warning stripes at the wing roots.
The large fuselage codes sit on smooth skin with no rivet detail; there water alone will do. The smaller markings on the engine nacelles follow pressed contours, and it is precisely with those that a drop of softening solution helps, applied only at the moment the motif is exactly in place. While the solution is working, do not move the decal and leave it undisturbed for at least forty-five minutes; softened film tears easily.
The package holds the printing only; the model of the four engine bomber in 1:32 scale is obtained separately. It pays to allow time, because the fuselage codes alone will take a whole evening on a fuselage this large.
