About product

Type b (GS) wheels for the B-17F and B-17G in 1:32 scale (Armory)

The set holds resin main landing gear wheels with weighted tires in the type b (GS) execution. It is intended for the late Flying Fortresses, that is the F and G versions. Armory issues more than one tire type for this aircraft alongside one another, because the footwear of operational machines differed; the type in the name is therefore a distinguishing detail between the individual products, not the name of an edition.

What to watch when fitting them

With weighted wheels the orientation decides. The flattened area has to point exactly downward and be at right angles to the surface, otherwise the model stands visibly crooked and the fault shows at once at a large scale. We recommend fitting the wheel dry first, standing the model on a flat board, turning both wheels to the same position and only then fixing them with glue. If the model stands on both main wheels and the tailwheel, set the longitudinal attitude of the fuselage at the same time. Check the hole for the axle beforehand with a drill, so that the wheel can be fitted without the pressure that would crack the thin wall of the casting.

Painting tips

Wash the resin in warm soapy water and spray it with a base coat, as otherwise the covering coat holds less well. Paint the tire in a dark gray, strongly matte shade; the sidewall can be lightened with a faint touch of a lighter gray, so that the pattern of the lettering and grooves stands out. Separate the hub with a ring of masking tape. Suggest dusting with a dry pigment around the contact patch and in a narrow band on the sidewall, not over the whole area, as otherwise the wheel loses contrast. When sanding resin, work wet and protect your airways.

Who the set is for

  • builders of B-17F and B-17G models in 1:32 scale
  • modelers who want the stance of a model on its surface set precisely
  • those who choose the tire tread from a period photograph
  • more experienced modelers used to resin and cyanoacrylate glue

This is an accessory set, not a model of the aircraft. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check the match with the landing gear of your own model beforehand.

FAQ

Operational machines received footwear from various suppliers and with various treads. Types a, b and c make it possible to match what can be seen in a photograph of a particular aircraft.

Fit the wheels dry, stand the model on a flat board and turn the flattened areas to point exactly downward. Only then fix the wheel with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue.

We recommend it. After washing it free of mold release agent, apply a thin coat of base paint, on which the covering shade then holds considerably better than directly on smooth resin.
