A decal sheet in 1:32 for two Junkers Ju 88A-1 bombers of Kampfgeschwader 77, both machines from a French airfield in September 1940.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Junkers Ju 88 came about as a fast bomber meant to escape fighters through its own speed. Before it reached the units it gained dive brakes for diving attacks and weight with them, so a purely high-speed machine became a universal carrier. The A-1 version is from the first production series, and it was with this one that German bombers entered the fighting over England. The fall of 1940 was the hardest for those crews: losses in daylight raids forced the formations over to night operations.
Both machines on the sheet belonged to Kampfgeschwader 77 and took off from the northern French airfield of Laon-Athies. The first is a staff aircraft with the code 3Z and BB, the second comes from the 5th Staffel of the same formation and carries the code 3Z and HN. Both are dated September 1940. The pair also serves to let the builder show the difference between staff and ordinary Staffel markings on one type, because it is the letters after the national insignia that give that relationship away. Both machines moreover carry the same prefix, so they can be built side by side as a pair from one airfield.
A large scale tempts you to apply a decal straight onto matte paint, but on a matte surface the film catches air and leaves a haze behind. It therefore pays to spray a gloss coat under the decals. The code letters on the fuselage of a bomber are long and hard to line up, so it is better to apply them one at a time and align them to the engraved lines. The aircraft is not in the package; the sheet is an accessory for a model. The paper of the sheet stands repeated soaking only to a limited degree, so always cut out only the decal you are applying and leave the rest dry.
