About product

Nate and its long greenhouse

The Nakajima Ki-27 was Japan's first army fighter with an enclosed pilot's compartment and a fixed, aerodynamically faired landing gear. In the clashes over Khalkhin Gol in 1939 it proved exceptionally agile and it lasted in the front line until the start of the war in the Pacific. The version marked with the letter b differs from the early one above all in the shape of the glazing, which went from an angular framework to a more flowing form.

A lot of framing for a little glass

The glazing of this machine stretches far back along the fuselage spine, so it forms a long band divided by frames into a series of fields. The ratio of the length of the frames to the area of the glass is higher here than on most European fighters of the same period. For the builder that means a great many meters of boundary that has to be led accurately, and the longer the boundary, the higher the probability that bled paint will turn up somewhere. A cut set covers this band in one go and all the fields already have the right width in advance.

The inside and three insignia

The inner mask deals with the situation where the sliding section of the model is displayed slid back and the frames are visible from the inside. Three national insignia masks then make it possible to spray the discs on the wings and on the fuselage straight in paint. Spraying has a particular benefit on Japanese machines: period markings were often applied over a finish that was already damaged, and spraying imitates that unevenness more faithfully than a smooth carrier film.

A small thing that pays off

Before you set about spraying, look over the edges of the fields against the light. If the mask has not bedded down somewhere, you will see a thin light line and it can still be pressed home. After spraying the same mistake is put right only with difficulty.

FAQ

Above all in the form of the glazing of the pilot's compartment, which on the later version lost the angular shape of the early framework.

Three, for the wings and both sides of the fuselage.

It has a large ratio of frame length to glass area, so many meters of boundary between the finish and the clear part have to be led accurately.

No. Once it is off, the glass is only checked against the light to see whether paint has run under the edge.
