The North American twin engine bomber B-25J Mitchell belonged to the most widespread machines of its category and the Royal Australian Air Force committed it in the closing phase of the fighting in the southwest Pacific. Machines recorded in the series beginning with the letter A flew from 1944 from bases in the north of the continent and their targets lay on the islands of the then Netherlands East Indies. These were long flights over the sea, during which the crews attacked shipping, airfields and Japanese island garrisons.
The data covers two specific aircraft of No. 2 Squadron, both from 1944 and both from the same unit. They differ in their record number and in details of the personal markings, so a builder chooses according to the period photograph he likes better. The motifs are printed on a continuous carrier film and are cut out close to the edge of the artwork.
The best adhesion is achieved on smooth gloss varnish. Soak the cut out piece in lukewarm water, let it rest a while and slide it off the paper onto the dampened place. A softener will help the artwork settle into panel lines and over rivets. Once dry the whole surface is gone over with matte or semi matte varnish, which hides the edges of the film.
The J version differs from earlier Mitchells in the glazed nose with a place for the bombardier and in the side gun packs, so during the build watch which variant of the nose section the kit holds. Store the sheet flat, out of reach of sun and damp; a film that is wavy or has yellowed breaks on a model and then cannot be saved even with a softener.
