Cuts for the Republic P-47D Thunderbolt in a large scale. Both faces of the glazing have their own film, and a pair of stencils for the stars and a decal sheet for the remaining markings go with them.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Thunderbolt was the largest single-engine fighter of its day. The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial with a turbocharger placed all the way behind the pilot called for ducting run through the whole fuselage, and hence that bulk. Eight 12.7 mm machine guns in the wings made every pass over a column of vehicles a serious event. In high-altitude escort as well as in the later attacks on ground targets the P-47D was among the toughest machines the Allies put up.
A number of Thunderbolts flew in bare metal with no camouflage, and a polished duralumin surface is the most awkward environment a decal can meet. The film of a decal reflects light differently from the metal beneath it, so a dull white rectangular shadow forms around the star, which is called silvering. Softeners lessen it but do not remove it entirely. A sprayed insignia through film does not have this problem at all, because no film exists and the sheen stays uniform across the whole area.
On a metal surface it pays to press the film once against the back of your hand before applying it, so that it loses some of its tack. Metallic finishes are more brittle than ordinary acrylics and a strongly tacky mask can pull small patches out of them on removal. The same caution applies to lifting: pull the film at an angle across the edge, never straight upwards. The aircraft model is not part of the box.
