About product

The aircraft that is still in the air today

The Supermarine Spitfire Mk IIa with the serial number P7350 is the oldest airworthy machine of its type in the world and at the same time the only flying Spitfire that actually took part in the Battle of Britain. According to surviving records it was the fourteenth of roughly twelve thousand aircraft built at the factory at Castle Bromwich near Birmingham. It was taken into the Royal Air Force in 1940 and from the late 1960s it has flown with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Four guises of one machine

It is exactly that which makes it an unusual subject for the modeler. Over the decades of display service the aircraft wore the markings of a whole series of units in turn, without any of them ever being its original wartime finish. This sheet covers four of them: the code UO with the letter T of No. 266 Squadron from 1972 to 1977, QV with the letter B of No. 19 Squadron from 1978 to 1981, SH with the letter D of No. 64 Squadron from the period 1982 to 1984, and EB with Z of No. 41 Squadron from 1985 to 1988. In 1976, moreover, the whole flight moved to the Coningsby base.

Who the set is for

It will be reached for mainly by those who want to build the machine in its present-day guise, that is, as an aircraft displayed at air shows rather than as a combat aircraft of the 1940s. The color finishes of this period tend to be better preserved and glossier, so it pays to finish the model to a semi-gloss rather than to a wartime matte. Display machines are also kept in exceptionally good condition, so the usual weathering and paint wear look rather out of place here. Anyone wanting to go into detail can obtain period photographs of the aircraft from a particular season, because small things changed with it from year to year. What is sold is the printing on its own; plastic and paints do not belong with it.
