A sheet of waterslide decals in 1:32 scale from the Czech maker AML Decals. It is neither a kit nor a finished model but an accessory for a modeler who wants to mark his large Spitfire as one particular historical machine. The set is devoted to the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIb that the Czech pilot Sgt Josef Balejka flew with No. 303 Squadron RAF. The Mk.IIb version differed from the basic Mk.IIa in having the so-called B wing with mixed cannon and machine gun armament.
The Spitfire Mk.II was the development continuation of the first production Spitfires, powered by a more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin, and reached the units at the turn of 1940 and 1941. It was used at the time when the RAF moved from defensive fighting over Britain to offensive sweeps over the occupied mainland. No. 303 Squadron RAF was a Polish fighter unit that had made its name in the Battle of Britain; besides Polish airmen, pilots of other nationalities including Czechs served with it, which makes this machine an interesting subject outside the usual Czechoslovak finishes.
Before applying, spray the area with gloss varnish; on a matte surface air would be trapped under the film and the edges would silver. Cut the decal out close to the marking, soak it for a few seconds in warm water and let it rest until the film moves freely. Transfer it onto the model with a brush, blot the excess water away with a cloth and let it dry thoroughly. In the large 1:32 scale the panel lines are clearly visible, so it pays to use a softener so that the decal follows the surface. A final matte coat evens out the sheen of the whole model.
The package holds only decals. The kit, the paints and the glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
