A set of masks intended for painting the road wheels of the Soviet 2S7 Pion heavy self-propelled gun and of its modernized form, the 2S7M. This is not a kit or a replacement part, but an aid that marks out the rubber tire band against the rim on the wheel. The set is cut for the Trumpeter kit.
The Pion stands on an unusually long tracked chassis derived from Soviet tank components and carries seven road wheels on each side. That is fourteen discs which have to look absolutely identical, because they end up side by side in one continuous row. The hull is low and the fenders do not cover the wheels, so the view of the finished vehicle from the side is made up largely of the running gear. The vehicle also braces itself on a folding rear spade when firing, so the underside and the wheels tend to be the natural focus of weathering and dust.
On a shelf a model is looked at from the side and from roughly a meter away. The border between the dark tire band and the lighter rim is one of the few sharp lines the eye finds on a running gear, and a shaky or bled edge brings down the impression of the whole vehicle even when the hull is built faultlessly. With fourteen wheels the mistake is also not repeated once but fourteen times. On a competition table the running gear tends to be the first thing a judge looks at, because the patience of the builder shows there soonest.
