This is a sheet of printed paper meant to be cut out and glued into a scene at a size of 1:35. It is not worked like a kit and not like a decal: the paper is cut with a scalpel along a rule, glued onto a prepared undercoat and only then patinated. Textiles are precisely the kind of accessory that gives a diorama color, depth and a clue to the scale faster than anything else, because the viewer's eye recognizes a familiar object at once.
A carpet suits a living interior, an improvised back area, a place under low furniture and the beaten earth floor of an outdoor scene. It pays to lay it so that it leads the eye toward the main figure or the machinery and to leave part of the area covered – a carpet whose edge disappears under a table or under a dropped blanket looks more believable than a regular rectangle in the middle of an empty floor. Textiles take careless handling too: a creased corner or slight buckling looks natural.
The undercoat has to be flat and non-absorbent, otherwise the paper will buckle once dry. A thin layer of PVA glue applied with a brush or a matte glue in a thin film proves itself; the paper is laid on from the center toward the edges and the air is pressed out. Once glued, it is a good idea to sand the edge lightly with the finest paper, so that the white cut disappears, or to go over it with a shade close to the printing. The patina is made by dusting with dry pastels and fine pigments around the perimeter of the area; walked paths can be suggested by darkening toward the center. Matte clear coat unifies the sheen of the paper with the rest of the diorama and protects the surface from fingerprints. Spray it in several very light layers, as a heavy layer could make the printing bleed.
