The real subject

The Sd.Kfz. 251 is a German half-track armored personnel carrier of the Second World War. The Ausf. D form is the late simplified version with a beveled rear and without the kinked plates along the sides of the rear part of the hull, which made production easier. The designation 251/1 belongs to the basic transport variant for an infantry squad. On it the hull is open at the top, so the interior fittings are visible on a finished model and are worth some attention.

What the set contains

These are photo-etched parts, that is, a flat metal sheet with etched features that you nip out and bend to shape. The set concentrates on the rear seats and the bin in the hull, and in the numbering of the range it is seventh in order. Photo-etched metal keeps the thickness and the sharp edges that cannot be reproduced in injected plastic at this scale. The exact scope and number of parts are given in the manufacturer's instructions, as is the kit the set is cut to fit.

Building and painting tips

• Separate the parts with a sharp blade on a hard surface, not with plastic nippers.
• Make the bends along the etched groove, ideally on a bending tool or against a straight metal edge.
• Glue with cyanoacrylate glue or solder; cement for polystyrene does not hold on metal.
• Degrease the parts before painting and apply a primer meant for metal.
• Paint the seats and let them dry before you close up the hull.
