Injection-molded plastic kit model of the Italian wheeled combat vehicle B1 Centauro in its late form (3rd series) in 1:35 scale from Trumpeter. The model captures the characteristic 8x8 chassis layout with large wheels and the rotating turret with a long gun; the late series differs from the early machines in modifications to the armor, the equipment and details of the hull.
The Centauro is an Italian wheeled tank destroyer on an 8x8 chassis that combines firepower close to that of a tank with the mobility and speed of a wheeled vehicle. The main armament is a 105 mm gun in a stabilized turret, supplemented with a modern fire control system. The vehicle was designed for fast reconnaissance and anti-tank defense and proved itself on missions abroad as well, where its ability to drive to the area under its own power and its lower transport demands compared with tracked tanks were valued. The later series took operating experience into account with improvements to protection and equipment.
The eight-wheeled chassis and the suspension call for careful fitting; paint the running gear and the lower hull before the side armor panels cover them. Glue the plastic with liquid modeling cement and sand the joints. Apply a base of primer before painting; lay a single-color or net-pattern camouflage finish on with an airbrush and lighten the upper surfaces gently. Dust and mud on the large wheels and in the wheel arches are rendered convincingly with washes and dry pigments.
