The AVRE designation refers to the engineer version, that is a machine modified to support engineer work rather than an ordinary tank in its original role. For a modeler it is an interesting subject precisely because it differs from the standard Centurion in armament and external equipment, so the finished model will not blend into the other British tanks in a display case. The package is a kit in its own right, not an accessory.
The Centurion was a British tank of postwar design that stayed in British and foreign service for decades and gave rise to a whole family of derived versions. The AVRE engineer variant came about by adapting the chassis for the needs of engineer units: in place of an anti-tank gun it carried a weapon intended to destroy obstacles and fortifications at short range, complemented by external engineer equipment. Machines of this category accompanied advancing units and cleared obstacles that would have stopped ordinary vehicles. The particular appearance is set by the version and the period of service, because the equipment changed over the years.
Finish and paint the running gear before you close the hull up and fit the side elements. Build and paint the engineer equipment separately and attach it only at the end, otherwise you cannot reach the parts underneath it. Apply the paint in thin coats so that the texture of the moldings stays visible. On engineer vehicles it pays to make the weathering a little stronger than on an ordinary tank: dust and mud pigments on the underside and in the running gear, scuffed edges where the vehicle would normally rub against obstacles, and a dark wash into the recesses and gaps.
