A diorama prop for urban scenes: an above-ground fire hydrant in 1:35 scale. Few elements tell a viewer they are in a town as fast as a hydrant on the pavement. It is not a kit of a vehicle but an accessory on its own, supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted.
A hydrant belongs on a corner, by the curb in front of a shop or at the gate of an industrial estate. It works superbly in modern and post-apocalyptic subjects alike: in a maintained street it shines with fresh paint, in a derelict quarter it rusts among weeds and litter. It is also an excellent narrative element, because a figure leaning on a hydrant, a dog at its foot or a military patrol on the corner will create an instant micro-scene around it. The 1:35 scale sits well with ordinary military vehicles and figures.
In many countries hydrants are painted in bold signal shades, and a classic strong red or yellow will turn a small item into an accent of color for a whole vignette. After the primer, lay on the base shade, bring the edges out with a lighter tone and add scuffs with a sponge. Rust streaks around the couplings and dust at the foot will settle the hydrant naturally into the pavement, and a gloss wash will suggest wet asphalt after rain.
