Hand pump and barrel, 1:35 scale (CMK)

A small accessory cast in resin for dioramas in 1:35 scale. It is neither a vehicle model nor a kit, but a pair of objects that can be set beside the machinery or into the corner of a base: a barrel and a hand pump of the kind used during the Second World War to transfer fuel and service fluids.

What it is suited to

A diorama lacks scale and story until it holds objects the viewer knows from everyday life. A barrel with a pump is one of the most effective of them: it explains at once what is going on in the scene, it gives a figure something meaningful to do and it fills an empty spot without drawing attention to itself. It can be used on its own on a base as well as cargo on the bed of a vehicle.

Building and painting tips

Wash the castings first in lukewarm soapy water and get the release agent off them. Cut the casting blocks away with a saw or a sharp knife, and on small parts rather in little pieces so that the casting does not crack. Go over the remains of the parting line with fine wet sandpaper. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Painting: a primer, then the color of the barrel and a metallic base coat on the pump. Chipped paint looks particularly good on the barrel: lay down a dark base, the shade itself over it, and then break that up locally with a sponge or the tip of a brush. Add rust in the seams, streaks running down under the outlet and dust at the bottom.
