German tank crew is a set of three figures in 1:35 scale from the Czech brand CMK. According to the name, the box holds three German army tank crewmen of the Second World War period. It is neither a vehicle model nor a kit - the figures serve as an accessory to an already built armored vehicle, to a scene on a base or to a diorama. The castings are supplied unpainted.
A vehicle model without a crew looks static and, above all, has no sense of size: the viewer cannot tell whether the hull comes up to the waist or to the shoulders. A figure in an open hatch settles that at once and at the same time gives the model a direction of gaze and a story. Tank crew figures are deliberately posed for this purpose - they tend to be modeled sitting in the turret hatch or leaning on the hull, so that they really do sit on the vehicle and need not be glued onto the base alongside it. Three figures in the box are enough to man one vehicle and to build a small scene around it.
Wash the resin castings first in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent so that no mold release agent is left on the surface - without that, paint holds badly and flakes off. Cut the casting blocks away with a saw or a sharp scalpel, sand down the mold seams and protect your breathing while sanding, as resin dust should not be inhaled. The parts are glued with cyanoacrylate glue; liquid plastic cement does not work on resin. Spray a thin coat of primer before painting, otherwise the paint slides on the smooth surface. Work from the large areas to the detail: the uniform first, then the skin, and finally the small items and the eyes. A dark wash brings out the folds of the cloth and a dry brush picks out the edges; a matte clear coat at the end brings the sheen of the whole figure into line with the vehicle model.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. The vehicle model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
