1:35 Israel Carpets is a printed paper sheet with carpet motifs for dioramas in 1:35 scale from the firm ETA diorama. It is not a kit and not a waterslide decal – the motifs are cut out of the sheet and laid or glued into an interior or onto a market stall in a scene.

A carpet is a small thing in a diorama with an unexpectedly large effect: it breaks up a uniform floor, brings color into a scene and gives away at once that this is a lived-in space. Painting a patterned carpet by hand in 1:35 scale is beyond most modelers, which is why it is printed. This sheet offers preprinted carpet motifs that are simply cut out and fitted. Paper has the advantage over a decal of a thickness of its own – a carpet can overhang a step, bend over the edge of a crate or hang draped over a railing.
Most often in the interior of a house with an open wall, in a tent, on a market stall or on the area in front of an entrance. It also works well away from the floor: a carpet thrown over a wall, over the bed of a vehicle or rolled up and propped against a wall looks lived in and natural. The 1:35 scale goes with ordinary figures, so the size of a piece against a person comes out by itself.
Cut the motif out with a scalpel leaving a small margin and fray the edges gently with the tip of a knife or a glass fiber brush – fringes and an irregular edge are what turn paper into textile. Before fitting, dampen the paper and let it bend slightly, so that it follows the unevenness of the undercoat; only then fix it with a thin layer of PVA glue. It bends better over an edge when the back of the paper is first run over with the blunt side of a scalpel. At the end unify the surface: fine dust with dry pastel in the corners, a slightly darkened spot on the walking path and matte clear coat, so that the carpet does not glare with a paper sheen. Do not paint over the pattern while doing so – the printing is the main value of the sheet.
It is a printed paper accessory, not a kit and not a decal. Glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
