About product

Eduard Big Ed 1:35 King Tiger Porsche - a combined set of photo-etched accessories

Big Ed is a format of the Czech manufacturer Eduard in which several separately sold photo-etched sets for the same model are brought together into one package. This combined set is intended for the plastic model of the Tiger II heavy tank with the Porsche turret in 1:35. It deals with the items that cannot be made thin enough in injected plastic: the fenders and their brackets, the grilles over the engine compartment, the tool clamps, the eyes, the plates and the small sheet-metal parts. A model of the tank is not in the package.

The real subject

The Tiger II was a German heavy tank of the end of the Second World War with a long gun barrel and heavily sloped armor. The first vehicles built carried a turret with a characteristic rounded front, for which the designation Porsche turret took hold in modeling practice; later production machines were given a turret with a flat front. It was a very heavy vehicle with limited mobility and high fuel consumption, whose deployment was problematic for technical reasons.

Building and painting tips

Fit the photo-etched fenders and grilles before you put any paint on the model. Cut the parts out with a scalpel and make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades so that the edge is sharp. Sand the plastic originals away. Degrease the photo-etch and spray it with a primer for metals, otherwise the paint peels. On a vehicle it pays to work with weathering: a dark wash will pick the grilles and the rivets out, and dust and mud pigments on the running gear and the lower parts will give the model scale. Finish the running gear and the inside of the hull before you close it up.

Who the set is for

  • builders of military vehicles in 1:35
  • modelers who want to replace coarse plastic fenders and grilles with thin metal
  • anyone who wants the accessories for one model together in a single box
  • more advanced modelers with experience of bending photo-etch

The combined set is supplied unassembled. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A designation for the turret of the first Tiger II vehicles built, with a rounded front. Later production machines had a turret with a flat front, so the set matches only the first pattern.

No. This is a bundle of photo-etched accessories. The plastic kit in 1:35 has to be obtained separately.

Before painting. The fenders, the grilles and the clamps are glued onto the bare model so that the whole thing can then be sprayed at once.

A sharp scalpel, tweezers and thin super glue are enough. A photo-etch bending tool makes the work markedly easier, but two blades and a flat surface will do instead.
