About product

1:35 A soldier kneeling on his left knee, a US infantry squad for the M1126 Stryker (CMK)

A resin figure in 1:35 scale from the maker CMK. The pose is specified unambiguously in the name: the soldier kneels on his left knee. Compared with the variant kneeling on the right knee this is a mirrored turn, and that has a greater effect on a scene than it seems. A mirrored pose determines which way the figure is turned and which of its halves it shows the viewer, so a scene beside the M1126 Stryker wheeled carrier is put together differently with it. The figure belongs to a range of figures forming one infantry squad.

The casting and arranging the pair

The casting comes on a casting block. Wash it in lukewarm water with detergent because of the mold release agent, cut the block off with a fine-toothed saw and sand the remainder down. Scrape the parting line along the outer sides of the legs and arms with the edge of a scalpel. A kneeling figure rests on its knee, the toe of its boot and often also on a hand or a weapon, and all these points have to really sit on the surface, otherwise the figure optically hangs in the air. Test it dry on the target terrain and sand the surfaces down gradually. If you have both kneeling variants, do not stand them in mirror symmetry facing each other, as the result then looks like a shop window. It is better to move them to different distances from the vehicle and turn each one differently. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and a wire pin in the knee strengthens the joint.

Painting and a single direction of light

With mirrored poses a mistake is easily made that breaks a scene: the modeler paints both figures the same, that is with the highlights on the same half of the body. But when one figure is turned to the left and the other to the right, the highlights should fall from one and the same side of the scene, not from the figure's point of view. Decide in advance where the light comes from and build the highlights and shadows on both figures accordingly. Undercoat the uniform with a base shade and pull the folds out with a thin glaze behind the knee and at the waist, and go only gently over the edges of the straps with a dry brush. Deal with the skin with a base, a brown glaze into the shadows and a fine highlight on the forehead and nose, and suggest the eyes with a dark line under a magnifier. Mix the shade of the uniform in a larger quantity so that the whole squad comes out of the same batch. Finally the knee and the boot get an earthy tint matching the terrain and matte clear coat closes the whole off.

Who the figure is for

  • Builders of the M1126 Stryker wheeled carrier in 1:35 scale
  • Diorama makers who want two kneeling figures in different orientations in a group
  • Modelers working out a single direction of light across a group of figures
  • Collectors putting together a whole infantry squad from figures of the same range

The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted as a resin casting. Glue, paints and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a mirrored turn of the pose. The figure rests on the other knee and thereby shows the viewer the opposite half of its body. In a scene the two variants therefore complement each other and can be arranged so that the group does not look monotonous.

Do not stand them in mirror symmetry facing each other. Move each to a different distance from the vehicle and turn them differently. A symmetrical arrangement looks like an exhibition display, not like a scene.

If you paint both figures the same, each one gets the light on its own half of the body, and because they are turned toward each other, in the scene it looks like two different suns. Choose one direction of light for the whole scene and build both figures to it.

According to the name one figure of a kneeling soldier. The number of parts of the casting and the particular gear are stated on the box.
